Pat's Flounder

A luminous study of the Western Australian flounder, rendered in watercolour on paper. Part of the ongoing Indian Pelagia collection, this work captures the flounder's characteristic flat form. It's mottled, pearlescent body marked by dark ocellated spots, delicate scaled texture, and the elegant comb of dorsal and ventral fins that frame the fish like a feathered border.

The palette is deliberately understated, with warm sandy tones, soft greys, and golden-olive fins that mirror the sandy shallows this species calls home. Up close, the iridescent pearlescent paint catches the light, giving the scales a subtle, shifting shimmer that no reproduction can fully convey, a quality that belongs entirely to the original.
