The Passage

A school of herring, mid-journey through open water. Small and scattered, they navigate between vast shelves of texture and dark; unhurried, purposeful, on their own journey.

Being one of the most immersive works in the collection, the canvas is built up in dramatic relief; cracked and cratered planes of aqua charcoal rise like underwater rock formations, threaded through with black fissures and lit from within by flashes of sunlit blue and pale gold. Light enters from the upper right in soft diagonal rays, the only reminder that a surface exists at all. Below, the water deepens to near-black before opening again into luminous blue-green passages where the herring move through.

The texture is the depth. Up close the surface is almost geological; layered, fractured, physical. Take a step back, and the ocean reveals itself.
